Udemy
Udemy is an online education platform that connects students to over 80,000 courses. Udemy wanted to improve their Marketplace tool, which is a data-driven instructor self-assessment tool used to improve overall course quality.
Challenge
Our goals were to improve Udemy’s Marketplace tool that encourages instructors to create high quality courses, help align courses with student demand, while focusing on revenue, traffic, and engagement.
Solution
We learned that Udemy instructors needed more than seeing data trends. They wanted data-driven insights to help make informed decisions by providing analytics such as tracking their goals, ways to increase revenue, and engaging more students. By interviewing instructors, using the design thinking approach, and creating visualizations, we made a platform of opportunities for learning, exploration, and engagement.
Process
1. User interviews and DEsign thinking approach
After interviewing users, we learned that instructors wanted help to decide which course to create and how to improve their course offerings and learn about student needs.
2. sketches
After learning about instructors’ needs we decided Marketplace tool should provide data to instructors about Udemy’s Marketplace, ROI, and students’ searches and demographics in order for the instructor to make informed decisions about creating or improving a course. We then created insights, including visualizations such as comparisons to other courses, comparisons to the average, and metrics. This helps the instructors can take action based on the data provided.
4. Wireframes
We started by adding a new instructor onboarding experience to understand the goals of the instructor. After onboarding, the user is introduced to a dashboard where they can track actions, favorite insights, view different analytics and course suggestions.
