String Installation

DevMynd String Installation

DevMynd expanded its physical space and wanted a new piece of artwork to inspire and welcome clients and employees alike. As part of the conceptual team for the new artwork, I proposed a string installation that would represent DevMynd's branded image.

Challenge

DevMynd wanted to create artwork for its recently expanded space. The challenge was to design a 3D installation piece that reflected DevMynd’s values.

Solution

Through a collaborative effort, I completed this project from concept to final installation.  I was able to effectively translate the representation of the company's brand use of right-angled triangles and color palette, into a 3D installation. Using Illustrator to create mockups and to calculate the dimensions needed for the design and building of the installation, I designed and built the installation.

Process

1. Exploration

I experimented with different types of string such as yarn, paracord, and plastic string. Ultimately, I chose hemp string because it can be dyed to meet DevMynd’s brand colors as well an organic material to give the room an airiness, open and welcoming feeling.

I tested different colors of dye combinations to find the correct shade for branding colors.

2. Build

After the hemp string was dyed, a professional built a frame and drilled holes for the strings to go through. I tied hundreds of strings through one side of the frame and then had it mounted to the wall. Once mounted, I took the remaining side of the string and pulled it through the corresponding hole to create a 90 degree angle and tied it to remain taut.

The strings tied through on side of the frame.

3. Final Design

The completed installation of this large scale design in the DevMynd reception area welcomes visitors and employees to the workspace by recreating the look and feel of DevMynd’s visual brand.

This is the completed installation.
